Joaquin Phoenix at his 'Absolute Finest'

  • By MyAlterEgo on

  • Say what you want, Joaquin Phoenix is the man (Grizzly Adams beard and all). He was the bright spot -- for me at least -- in Signs; was great as Commodus in Gladiator; and portrayed Johnny Cash, almost to a "T."

Anyone who follows Phoenix, or is a moviegoer in general, knows about his drugged-out and bearded-caveman  appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, about 2 years ago.

If you did not catch the interview, then watch it right now so you have some clew to what the hell is going on.

Many pondered if this was all an act, or if he was truly that f***ed up in the head at the time. F***ed up in the head began to be more of a possibility when Joaquin decided to retire from acting (when he was at the top of his game?) and start up a rapping career. Don't believe me? Choose from these three articles to read: Article 1; Article 2; Article 3. You can also watch him rip the shit out of this beat on Youtube.

Alas, everything was just a funny little hoax, and the "I'm Still Here" documentary on Phoenix retiring from acting to start a rap career, was a giant lie (I am crying deep inside). Much of the general public, and even some critics, had a strong feeling that everything was staged; so I stand up and applaud you people for calling out this phony act of lunacy -- I went along with it, because....well.....I enjoyed the character, and got some damn good laughs out of the whole situation.

With everything that has happened, I would like to reflect back, and take a look at some of the best picture Mr. Joaquin Phoenix provided the paparazzi with. Enjoy!

Fantastic.....am I right? If you say this is stupid, then I say:
I'm sorry you have no sense of humor.

It should be interesting to see if anybody takes him seriously after this stunt...

You often wander about the type of mind that comes up with a hoax like this. Not to mention, everything went on for almost 2 years.

Joaquin has a lot of talent, so I'm sure it will not be too long before people start taking him seriously -- this could just be wishful thinking, however.

Phoenix has ventured behind the camera, directing music videos as well as producing movies and television shows, and has recorded an album, the soundtrack to Walk the Line. He is also known for his work as a social activist, particularly as an advocate for animal rights.

His father, John Lee Bottom, was a lapsed Catholic from Fontana, California. His mother, Arlyn (née Dunetz), was born in the Bronx, New York to Jewish parents whose families emigrated from Russia and Hungary. In 1968, Arlyn left her family and moved to California, later meeting Phoenix's father while hitch-hiking. They married in 1969, then later joined the religious cult the Children of God. They began travelling throughout South America.
